What are cataracts?

Cataracts are a condition that can develope in one or both eyes. They cause the lens of the eye to become cloudy rather than their normal state of being clear.

In a healthy eye the light will pass through the clear lens to the back of the eye, but when an eye is damaged by cataracts the cloudy lens blocks some of the light and prevents it reaching the back of the eye resulting in the blurring of the vision of the person suffering.

The cloudier the lens becomes, the worse the person's vision will be.

There are two types of cataracts:

Age related cataracts  which appear later in life.

Congenital cataracts which may be present from birth.
